1Old brick in the lower city
Durand, Kirkendall, Strathcona, Crown Point and the streets off Barton and King: century brick homes with low stone basements, cast-iron stacks, galvanized supply lines and, in some cases, the original lead water service. Many still heat with a converted gravity hot-water boiler and cast-iron radiators.
2Post-war homes on the Mountain
Bungalows and backsplits from the 1950s and '60s, often on their second or third furnace. Copper supply, clay or cast-iron laterals, and basements that were finished long after the plumbing was put in.
3Newer builds below and above the Escarpment
Stoney Creek, Ancaster and Burlington subdivisions with high-efficiency furnaces, sump pits, and tankless or rental water heaters. Different problems, same need for someone who answers.
